《摩登家庭》S3E9：“攤牌”用英語怎麼說？大綱

感恩節菲爾邀請了朋友肯尼斯來家裏做客，克萊爾以這位朋友沒上大學的經歷想讓海莉引以爲戒，沒想這位朋友現在創業成了大富翁，菲爾怪克萊爾經常打擊他的奇思妙想毀掉他的“錢”程。來看《摩登家庭》第三季第九集，英語君總結了四個知識點。

1. have a soft spot for sb

soft spot指的是易受打動之點，有點“軟肋”的意味。

have a soft spot for sb常指莫名其妙地“十分喜愛（某人）”。

She'd always had a soft spot for her younger nephew.

她一直很喜歡她的小侄子。

2. ride a wave 

△肯尼斯是個億萬富翁，在創業浪潮中賺了很多錢。

ride (on) a wave of sth是個很形象的短語，表示“乘…之勢；借…的東風”

The new president is riding (on) a wave of popularity.

新總統深得人心，大獲其益。

3. upstage

upstage是“搶…的風頭”的意思，再補充兩個近義表達：

①steal sb's thunder

Sandy stole my thunder when she announced that she was pregnant two days before I'd planned to tell people about my pregnancy.

在我打算告訴大家我懷孕的消息之前兩天，桑迪搶先宣佈她懷孕了，搶了我的風頭。

②steal the show

Despite fine acting by several well-known stars it was a young newcomer who stole the show.

儘管幾位名角演出都很出色，卻未曾想竟讓一名新秀搶盡風頭。

4. put/lay your cards on the table

put/lay your cards on the table？把牌放在桌子上，也就是“攤牌，和盤托出”的意思。

英語裏“攤牌”還可以說：

①show your hand

Keep the names of the team secret - don't show your hand until the day of the game.

球隊的名稱要保密——比賽那天再宣佈。

②tip your hand

Despite weeks of media speculation, the president refused to tip his hand about his plans for re-election.

儘管數週來媒體都在猜測，但總統拒絕透露爭取連任的計劃。
