“But Always” follows two friends and later lovers, Anran (Gao Yuanyuan) and Zhao Yongyuan (Nicholas Tse), as they meet in childhood in Beijing in 1982, repeatedly separate without goodbyes, reunite or fail to rendezvous in assorted torrential downpours and pine for each other at their favorite bus stop.
《一生一世》講述了青梅竹馬的戀人安然（高圓圓飾）和趙永遠（謝霆鋒飾）的愛情故事。1982年，他們於幼年在北京相識，而後多次不辭而別。他們有時重逢，或者因爲傾盆大雨而未能抵達約會地點，於是在他們最喜歡的公交車站裏彼此思念。Because the movie’s opening sequence is set in New York in 2001 — and prominently features shots of the twin towers — “But Always,” told in flashback, leaves little doubt about how it will end. Watching it means waiting for the other shoe to drop: anticipating the moment when this already tacky weepie will resolve itself in horrific, exploitative fashion.
《一生一世》的開場設定在2001年的紐約，雙子塔的鏡頭十分醒目；電影以倒敘手法講述，幾乎沒有給觀衆留下猜測結局的空間。觀看這部電影就像等着另一隻鞋子落下：期待着這個已經夠俗套的催淚片以可怕又濫情的方式自我消解的那一刻。Along the way, the film offers faint allusions to economic change in China. Anran is a medical student who travels abroad to study at Columbia. Zhao Yongyuan, imprisoned after a brawl, makes a fortune in international clothing sales.
通過這部片子，也能隱約看到中國的經濟變化。安然是在哥倫比亞大學就讀的醫科留學生。趙永遠因鬥毆入獄，後來靠進出口服裝發了財。But social shifts come second to melodrama. As if there weren’t already enough tragedy involved, Anran’s mother dies in an earthquake rescue in 1976. The movie even resorts to that old standby from “An Affair to Remember,” the car accident.
但是在這部劇情片中，社會變遷是次要的。好像嫌片中的悲劇還不夠，安然的媽媽也在1976年的地震救援中喪生。這部影片甚至借用了《金玉盟》(An Affair to Remember)中的老套橋段——車禍。Bathed in golden sunlight and often accompanied by a treacly piano score, Anran and Zhao Yongyuan make eyes longingly, but they don’t connect in anything but the most superficial way. In the movie’s scheme, the fact that at least one will die on Sept. 11 is just fate’s way of trampling on an attractive couple’s plans.
安然和趙永遠沐浴在金色的陽光中，愛慕地相互凝視，往往還伴隨着甜蜜的鋼琴曲。但他們僅以最爲膚淺的方式聯繫在一起。根據影片的安排，他倆至少有一個會死於911襲擊，這不過是命運對這對漂亮情侶人生規劃的踐踏。
