美國習慣用語 第797:光榮和獎勵

昨天我看了一部很不錯的電影。情節很棒，畫面優美，音樂動聽，而且裏面每個角色的表演都可圈可點。這讓我想到一個習慣用語：across the board. Across the board 的意思是“全面地，整體地”。在我剛纔提到的影片中，the performances were excellent across the board, 所有演員的表演都非常出色。 在生活中，取得整體的成功或進步並不容易。下面這段話中的學生就取得了這樣的成績。我們來聽一聽：

例句-1：Last semester, I encouraged Julie to work harder in order to get better grades. She certainly took my advice. She just showed me her report card and she's made dramatic improvement. Not just in one or two classes, but across the board. Amazingly, she's made progress in every subject.

這段話是說：上個學期，我鼓勵Julie在學習上再加把勁兒，提高成績。她真聽話。剛纔她給我看了成績單，進步太顯著了! 而且，她的進步並不侷限在一兩門課上，而是整體進步。她各門成績都大幅度提高，真讓人刮目相看。

成績全面進步的確讓人高興! 不過，如果遇到prices go up across the board, 物價全面上升；或者taxes increase across the board, 全面加稅，那可就是壞消息了!

剛纔我們說到全面進步值得慶賀，可是有些光榮和獎勵我們卻更願意自己獨享。下面這段話中的公司僱員就很想獲得這種獎勵。那麼，他有沒有如願呢？我們來聽聽：

例句-2：Since it was the employees in our department that saved the company so much money, we assumed that we were the only ones getting salary increases. Not true. The CEO approved them across the board. He believes all the divisions should be rewarded for our recent success.

這段話的意思是：既然公司能省下那麼多錢都是我們部門的功勞，我們覺得，只有我們才應該獲得加薪獎勵。結果可不是這樣。公司首席執行官批准給員工們全面加薪。他覺得，所有部門都應該爲公司最近取得的成績而獲得獎勵。

這個公司主管的做法就是英文裏說的"to share and share alike" - 平均分配。畢竟，公司的成績也是大家整體配合取得的。不過要是我，我會給立功部門一些額外的獎勵，讓他們覺得自己與衆不同。
