Brexit could lead to the development of a new form of the English language, according to a new academic paper.

Dr Marko Modiano, of Gavle University in Sweden, said there are already signs that "Euro-English" is developing its own distinct way of speaking.

Euro-English has already developed its own new definitions for some words based on the "Eurospeak". For example, "Berlaymont" means "bureaucracy"; "conditionality" is used as "conditions".

Researchers also noted that the English grammar is changing.

One example is the expansion of the "-ing" form in utterances such as "I am coming from Spain", which, in standardized varieties of English would be "I come from Spain".

擴大言語中-ing形式的使用範圍就是個例子,比如“I am coming from Spain(我來自西班牙)”,用標準英語表達應是“I come from Spain”。

The EU would have only about 5 million native speakers of English after Brexit, representing about 1% of population.

With the British gone, nobody will be there to defend UK English for competition, not only from American English but also from other languages, Dr Modiano said.
