I was 44 when I retired. I think the earlier the better if you can afford it. Also, note that “retirement” - especially early retirement - doesn’t mean sitting around doing nothing all day long. Most retired people, early retired or not, continue to stay very active - many even “working” in some capacity. That work might be volunteering, or actual paid work. Either way it is work done because they want to do it, not because a certain level of additional income is needed.
